Why beachside planners head inland to Oakland Park

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea sits on a long, narrow barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic, centered where State Road A1A meets Commercial Boulevard. The town has kept its small-town scale on purpose: according to the Town’s history page, it has severely limited building heights since 1973.

That low-rise charm is a big part of why people love living there. But when a condo board needs a seat for every owner, or a couple wants 100 guests at a seated dinner for their 40th anniversary, a short drive inland opens up a lot more room and a lot more parking.

The Center for Spiritual Living is that short drive. Head west from Anglin’s Fishing Pier, cross the Intracoastal, and stay on Commercial Boulevard until you reach Dixie Highway. The building welcomes events of every kind and every background, and your gathering doesn’t need to be spiritual in any way.

How far is it from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea?

From the center of town, it’s about 6 minutes and 2.6 miles, with roughly 2.3 of those miles on Commercial Boulevard (SR 870). From neighboring Sea Ranch Lakes, the gated village on North Ocean Drive, the trip is about 9 minutes and 3.4 miles, starting on A1A and then turning west on Commercial.

These are typical drive times from each town’s center point, not traffic-adjusted estimates. Commercial Boulevard gets busier at rush hour and during the winter season, when the town’s population swells. Leave a little cushion, especially for evening events.

The short, single-road route is easy to describe on an invitation or a meeting notice: “Take Commercial west to Dixie Highway.” For older guests who prefer not to drive the interstate, that simplicity counts.

Vow renewals, anniversary dinners and milestone birthdays

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a town with plenty of life experience. The 2020 census put the median age at 62.7, with 44.3% of residents 65 or older. That’s a community full of golden anniversaries, 75th and 80th birthdays, and couples who’d like to say their vows again in front of the grandkids.

A vow renewal in two acts

A renewal works nicely as a short ceremony followed by dinner. Guests can gather in the Welcome Lobby (up to 200 standing) with its couches and club chairs, which older guests appreciate. Then the Main Auditorium hosts the ceremony and a seated dinner for up to 110 at its thirteen 60-inch round tables. Confirm with Jim Wood how the room changeover would work for your timeline.

Want to share a slideshow of 50 years of photos? The auditorium has projection and a professional sound system for toasts. If a sibling up north can’t make the trip, the booth’s streaming capability lets them watch live.

Celebrations of life

Older communities also gather to remember. A celebration of life can use the auditorium for a program of speakers and music, with the lobby available for a reception afterward. The kitchen supports a caterer or a family’s own food team. “End-of-life celebrations” are listed among the event types on the rental page, so you’re asking for something the venue already expects to host.

Condo and homeowner association annual meetings

The other big event type for the barrier island is the association meeting. In the 2020 census, 46.4% of the town’s housing units were vacant, a pattern consistent with seasonal ownership, and the population nearly doubles when snowbirds and tourists arrive for the winter. Boards with owners spread between Florida and the north need a room that works for both groups.

Matching the room to the meeting

A board meeting or committee session fits the Multipurpose Room, which seats 40 conference-style and includes a whiteboard. A full owners’ meeting can move to the Main Auditorium, where 275 seats, projection for budgets and site plans, and a presidential teleprompter for the presenter make a long agenda easier to follow.

Owners who can’t be there

Streaming from the auditorium’s sound and video booth can help absent owners follow along. Remote participation and voting rules are set by your association’s documents and Florida law, so check with your manager or attorney before promising owners a virtual option. Then talk to Jim about AV staffing; the booth is run by the Center’s team, and equipment and operator fees are quoted on inquiry.

Password-protected complimentary Wi-Fi helps the property manager pull up documents and lets a secretary take minutes on a laptop.

Planning tip: For an owners’ meeting, set the registration table in the Welcome Lobby rather than at the auditorium door. Owners can sign in, pick up the agenda and chat on the couches without creating a line that blocks the room.

What’s included: tables, linens, place settings and the kitchen

With the Main Auditorium you’ll have thirteen 60-inch round tables (seating 8 each) with basic linens, a set of rectangular buffet tables with linens, six square card tables, six high-top cocktail tables with black linens or spandex, two blue linen couches, two club chairs and 275 tan banquet chairs. Place settings for 200 are included: salad and dinner plates, full dinnerware, basic linen napkins and water glasses.

The Multipurpose Room includes four 60-inch rounds, buffet and card tables, high-tops, 50 chairs and a whiteboard. Not everything fits in the room at once, and the team will help you choose the right setup.

Both rooms come with kitchen access at no additional charge. The kitchen has two microwave ovens, a commercial coffee maker (a must for a morning meeting), a double-door refrigerator and a commercial reach-in refrigerator with 26 tray holders.

Sound, video, streaming and teleprompter

The Main Auditorium’s fully equipped sound and video booth includes projection, streaming capabilities and a presidential teleprompter. For a vow renewal, that means a microphone for the couple and a screen for the photo montage. For an association meeting, it means the treasurer’s slides are readable from the back row.

The booth is staffed by the Center’s team, so you’re not left figuring out a mixing board. Ask about equipment and operator fees when you request your quote. You can see how the Center uses streaming for its own programs on the livestream page.

When to book: the winter season

Winter is when the island fills up. The town’s Sunday Farmers’ Market runs at El Prado Park from December through May, and the town events calendar also lists Christmas By-The-Sea, Taste of the Beach and a Veterans Day Celebration. It’s also when many associations want their annual meeting, since seasonal owners are in town.

If your meeting or celebration needs a date between December and May, reach out as soon as your board or family settles on a window. To see what else is scheduled in the building, check the Center’s calendar.

Parking and arrival for guests from the beach

The on-site lot holds up to 150 vehicles, which removes the parking puzzle that beach-area events can bring. Older guests can be dropped at the front entrance and walk straight into the Welcome Lobby.

Neighbors in Oakland Park proper have an even shorter trip; see our Oakland Park event space guide. Friends from the Island City can read about celebrations near Wilton Manors, and planners a bit farther up the coast can see our Pompano Beach event venue post.
